Tom Hayden, Jane Fonda - It was around Christmas time in the early '80s and I was a young Marine going home on leave in full dress uniform. I was at the Salt Lake International Airport baggage claim, when I saw a woman who was making herself conspicuous by trying to be inconspicuous. She was wearing a very unflattering dress, a big hat, and sunglasses. I wandered over near where she was standing and saw a name written on some boxes near her. The name was HAYDEN. I knew right away that she was Jane Fonda. I walked away to get closer to the baggage carousel to wait for my bag. Then I saw her husband, Tom Hayden, so I got an idea. I walked toward Jane, with a smile of recognition on my face, blew right by her and walked up to Mr. Hayden. Totally snubbing Ms. Fonda, I stuck my hand out to Mr. Hayden and said, "You're Tom Hayden, aren't you?". After he got over the initial shock of not being recognized as "Jane Fonda's husband", he and I had a really nice chat for nearly a half hour. The whole time, she stood there quietly fuming. When I told my brother (a VietNam veteran) about this, he took me out and got me drunk - his way of thanking me for what I did to "Hanoi Jane".
