  • Count Basie - In 1983, I was a Blackjack dealer working in Freeport, Bahamas at the El Casino. After starting a shift, I was assigned to a table where Count Basie was relaxing, playing Blackjack. At this time, he wasn’t very mobile and was in a wheelchair, accompanied by his wife and friends. Even though I was only 22, I was very aware of Mr. Basie, as my mother loved jazz and his music was often being played in our home in Wales, where I grew up. in between shuffling cards at the end of each shoe, I spent every moment available talking to the Count and his wife. What an amazing couple and so much humility, when I mentioned that my mum was a massive fan, with many of his records. Even though it was against protocol, I asked him if he would sign his autograph to my mum, which he did willingly on a napkin. my mum was ecstatic on receiving the autograph. As for the Count, he now lived in a property in Freeport, near the golf course, where he could enjoy the fresh air. Sadly, he passed away less than a year after I met him, as did my mum a few months before him.

  • Eddie Rabbitt - I went to so many concerts and made a fool of myself, he actually started to remember me. He sang "You and I" to me once in 1984. I nearly fainted. He died way too soon. I miss going to see him.

  • Phyllis Diller - Phyllis Diller was scheduled to do a talk show on WYES-TV, PBS in New Orleans, Louisiana. When her car stopped in front of the studio, there was a long sidewalk up to the entrance. As she walked,a little Italian lady was sweeping her front sidewalk and saw Phyllis enter the building. The show was about ninety minutes long, everyone was totally in love with Phyllis Diller, she was so gracious to all of us. As she left the building, the little Italian lady had called all of her Friends and neighbors to see Phyllis Diller! Phyllis didn't rush at all, she spoke to each little lady and autographed a picture for each person. As the limo pulled away, Phyllis was waving out the back window at the little ladies. Our TV studio had an on-air auction, one of the most successful PBS yearly auctions in the United States, raising over a million dollars in one week every year. To support the station, Phyllis sent autographed gifts for the auction from all over the world.

  • Sammy Davis, Jr. - Sammy Davis came into the office building I was working in as a "temp" in Long Island, New York to do business with the company. I was sitting in the second row of a particular department and he gave me such a warm greeting as he walked by. He did not have to look or say anything to me but he chose to. This made me feel that he was a very kind person.

  • Skitch Henderson - Skitch's home was always open to the community because of his connection to cultural events of Western Connecticut State University. Skitch was the most accessible celebrity I have ever met, and he was so nice and accommodating, he agreed to give me his autograph at least three times in the same day and let my family and me take pictures with him. He was also ready with stories about his life to any individual who requested one. A nice, nice man!

  • Frank Fontaine - April 19 1963 - I was an 11 year old at Freedomland in The Bronx. Before a performance, one of Mr. Fontaine's assistants spotted me doing a Crazy Guggenheim imitation, complete with the floppy hat. He brought me backstage, where Mr. Fontaine clowned with me after seeing my imitation - he had me in hysterics - gave me an autograph. What a kind gentleman and talent - beautiful voice from the face of a clown - inspired me to do some singing of my own. I hope he is always remembered well.

  • Mark Martin - I attended a .38 Special concert in Watkins Glen, NY, the weekend of the big NASCAR race. I noticed a familiar face standing next to me (it was an outdoor concert and everyone was standing shoulder to shoulder...crammed in pretty tight). It took me a little while before it hit me that I was standing shoulder to shoulder with Mark Martin. I decided to refrain from asking for an autograph and let him enjoy the concert.

  • Red Skelton - I was living in the hills above Palm Springs but was down in the Springs one afternoon and in front of me in line at the grocery store was a very tall older man. When he turned, I realized it was Red Skelton. I said hello and he chatted with me a bit. I told him that a Tuesday night would not go by that we did not watch his show. He was so gracious and truely a gentleman. When he left, he waved me goodbye!
