Story 230
Jerry West, John Wooden - In November 2002, three friends and I went to the John Wooden Classic in Indianapolis. John Wooden was sitting across the aisle and about ten rows down from us. During timeouts of the Purdue basketball game, they would allow fans to walk down to Mr. Wooden's seat and he would sign autographs. I had him sign his picture in my program and I said "Thanks Coach" and he replied with "You're welcome" with a smile on his face. As I was heading back up to my seat, my friend JP tapped me on the shoulder and told me to look at the man sitting in the seat directly behind our seats. It was Jerry West, he was there scouting for the Memphis Grizzlies. We asked Mr. West if he would sign our programs as well. He barely looked at us, but he did autograph them for us. My friend JP asked which Purdue player he was scouting, and Mr. West just laughed and said, "I'm really here for the Duke/UCLA game. And yes, Purdue did win their game against Louisville.
