Story 414
Charles Durning - I was checking out at the Auburn Mall Sears store in Auburn, Massachusetts, and noticed a man looking at tools. I mentioned to the cashier that he loked, "familiar". She replied that it was Charles Durning, the actor and said that he comes in here quite often since he lived just across the Connecticutt border. I replied that I had recently seen him in "Twilight's Last Gleaming" with Burt Lancaster and had thoroughly enjoyed it. Almost immediately, Mr. Durning, who had silently joined the line, said, "I really enjoyed working on that film. Burt was a brilliant actor to work with." We chatted for a few minutes, and he mentioned that he was in the store for hardware to repair some cabinets and stuff in his house. I thanked Mr. Durning for my night's entertainment and said I looked forward to his future films. Unfortunately, my transaction was done, so I nodded goodbye. He seems like a real down-to-earth type person and a fellow 'do-it-yourselfer'.
