Eddie "Rochester" Anderson - I was a young teen-ager when my father got us ring-side seats to see boxing at NYC's Madison Square Garden. This was a very different experience for me. Not only was this the first time I'd seen Professional Boxing but this was the first time I was so close to so many obviously wealthy people, both Black and White. There was an older man sitting next to my father and he was drunk. I heard him tell my father that he recognized Eddie "Rochester" Anderson from "The Jack Benny Show", in the seats to our left. The next thing I know this guy goes over to Mr. Anderson and orders him to "Come here, there's somebody I want you to meet." By rights, Mr. Anderson should have told him to go to hell. But he didn't. He came over to me and gave me the biggest smile and the friendliest greeting as he shook my hand. His eyes sparkled, his handshake was warm...and I couldn't help but notice that all the caps on his teeth were gold. I couldn't have been taught a better lesson by a kindlier gentleman.
