Story 480
Count Basie - In 1983, I was a Blackjack dealer working in Freeport, Bahamas at the El Casino. After starting a shift, I was assigned to a table where Count Basie was relaxing, playing Blackjack. At this time, he wasn’t very mobile and was in a wheelchair, accompanied by his wife and friends. Even though I was only 22, I was very aware of Mr. Basie, as my mother loved jazz and his music was often being played in our home in Wales, where I grew up. in between shuffling cards at the end of each shoe, I spent every moment available talking to the Count and his wife. What an amazing couple and so much humility, when I mentioned that my mum was a massive fan, with many of his records. Even though it was against protocol, I asked him if he would sign his autograph to my mum, which he did willingly on a napkin. my mum was ecstatic on receiving the autograph. As for the Count, he now lived in a property in Freeport, near the golf course, where he could enjoy the fresh air. Sadly, he passed away less than a year after I met him, as did my mum a few months before him.
