Story 459
Gene Rayburn - It was about 9:10 on a Friday night, I had just came back from dinner in Westchester. I had parked the car in the garage around the corner from where we lived and were walking down the street, just steps away from our front door, when a man passed us. my wife said, "That's the game show guy." I then turned around, and at the same time, so did the guy. Lo and behold...it was Gene Rayburn from the Match Game, the classic game show from the 60's & 70s. His face lit up , and he called out, "How are you? Gene Rayburn." He stuck out his hand, and I shook it. He looked pretty good, that trademark smile that had the secrets of thousands of game show questions, answers and ad-libs behind it. I asked him how he was, and suddenly, his face darkened. "Not so good", he replied. Naturally, I asked what was wrong, thinking health, or professional problems. He started to cry. I looked at each other. "My wife just died." We each professed sympathy and condolences. He told us it had just happened a couple of weeks ago. "I can't talk anymore, but thank you for your concern. It was nice meeting you." He turned, sobbing and walked away. I then quickly invited Rayburn into into my house and we drank and talked with him about the memories he had with her and some memories from the Match Game as well. To this day, I remember that November 1996 day when I met the Match Game host Gene Rayburn.
