Story 257
Pat Nixon - As a pre-adolescent, I was in the National Spelling Bee in 1971. The spellers were treated to a whirlwind week of Washington, D.C. sightseeing before and after the bee, including tours of the U.S. Mint, all the memorials, a session of Congress (bonus dead person: I also shook hands with Shirley Chisholm), and the White House and handshaking with the First Lady. Mrs. Nixon, at the time, was less than two weeks away from Tricia's wedding, and boy, did she look stressed. She wore an aqua skirt suit and a frozen smile on her face. Even though I was 12, I could tell as she shook my hand that she would rather have been anyplace else. (No sign of Dick that day.)
